Senator Franken endorses PolyMet, dismisses environmental concerns

Franken-Official-Portrait_150pxLots of politicians have spoken up in favor of sulfide mining in northeastern Minnesota the last couple weeks. Much of it was from long-time supporters of the industry with a single-minded focus on job creation. But Sen. Al Franken’s recent support was particularly upsetting because we were counting on our newest Senator to give it a thoughtful look before weighing in.

Please call Sen. Franken’s office today and tell him how disappointed you are in his decision to judge the project before its environmental impacts are fully understood:

Write a letter to the editor

Acid Mine Drainage, sulfide mining, MontanaAn editorial published by the Duluth News Tribune over the weekend voiced full support for the PolyMet project, repeated industry talking points, ignored environmental concerns, and dismissed the thousands of people that have concerns about the mining. We need as many folks as possible to submit letters to the editor of the paper to set the record straight! If you want help writing a letter, please just reply to this email and I’ll be glad to supply specific facts or anything else you need!

Hunting and angling coalition calls for PolyMet accountability

Members of Minnesota’s hunting and angling community issued a statement recently highlighting concerns about the PolyMet mine proposal and calling for state legislation to ensure PolyMet and other sulfide mining companies put up a sufficient “damage deposit” to clean up their toxic messes. Read the statement…

Support “Precious Waters”

The campaign to protect our lakes, rivers and streams from sulfide mining pollution is gaining incredible energy, but at the same time the mining industry and its friends are ramping up efforts to push through mining proposals and silence environmental concerns. Please make a contribution before Dec. 31 to protect our water today and for future generations. Make a secure online donation today.

Video from PolyMet “political rally”

Not only was the public not given the chance to speak at the two open houses the DNR put together for the PolyMet Draft Environmental Impact Statement, three Iron Range politicians were given the stage to voice their unequivocal support for the project. The representatives comments were all about the jobs the project might create, which was inappropriate for a meeting that was intended to discuss the environmental impacts. Check out the video of their speeches to see for yourself.
