PolyMet draft EIS misses release date

Earlier this month, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources announced that the draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the PolyMet sulfide mine proposal would be released “the week of Oct. 19,” with a public comment period set to begin on Nov. 2.

Long story short, last week came and went without the promised release. A notice appeared on the DNR’s PolyMet project website at about 5:30 p.m. on Friday stating:

Due to editing by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and subsequent final review, we regret we are unable to post the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the PolyMet Mining Inc. NorthMet project at this time.

Two of the three volumes of the 1,800-page document are complete and ready to post. Volume I will be finalized early during the first part of the week of October 26. We will then post all three volumes on this site.

The DEIS has still not been released this week. Once it does come out, it will be closely analyzed by concerned citizens, organizations and nationally-recognized experts.
